Main Ingredients
- 4 large onions thinly sliced
- 4 cups beef broth
- ½ cup white wine
- 2 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 4 slices French bread toasted
- 1 cup Gruyere cheese grated
Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 25 minutes.
Add sugar and salt, cook for another 5 minutes.
Pour in white wine to deglaze the pot, then add beef broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with a slice of toasted French bread and grated Gruyere cheese.
Place bowls on a baking sheet and bake until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 10 minutes.
