Tamales Recipe

Ingredients 

Masa Dough

  • 4 cups Masa harina
  • 2 cups Chicken broth
  • 1 cup Lard or vegetable shortening
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt

Filling

  • 2 cups Shredded chicken or pork
  • 1 cup Red chili sauce
  • 1 package Dried corn husks soaked in warm water

Instructions 

  1. Soak corn husks in warm water for at least 30 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, mix masa harina, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add chicken broth until dough forms.
  3. In another bowl, beat lard until fluffy. Add to masa dough and mix until combined.
  4. Spread a thin layer of masa dough on each corn husk. Add a spoonful of filling in the center.
  5. Fold the sides of the husk in and then fold the bottom up. Tie with a strip of husk if needed.
  6. Place tamales upright in a steamer. Steam for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until masa is firm.
